Our Joseph MELLOT family and winery have their roots in Sancerre: its history began 5 centuries ago with Pierre-Etienne, the first in our long line of winemakers. At the end of the 17th century, César Mellot was King Louis XIV’s Wine Adviser.
Over time, Joseph MELLOT expanded by acquiring new vineyards. Nowadays, our Portfolio includes a wide variety of wines from the Centre-Loire Region.
Managed since 2005 by Catherine Corbeau-Mellot who carries on, with passion and talent, her husband’s Alexandre and his ancestors’ work, Joseph MELLOT Winery maintains its core values of quality, environmental responsibility, sharing/conviviality and (generational) transmission/continuity?.
Joseph MELLOT Winery produces all 8 Centre-Loire AOCs (‘Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée’): Sancerre, Menetou-Salon, Pouilly-Fumé, Pouilly-sur-Loire, Quincy, Reuilly, Coteaux du Giennois and Châteaumeillant.
Thanks to its unique know-how, our Estate has specialized, over the generations, in the great wines of the Center Loire to become today a recognized Ambassador of our region.
Whatever the Appellation soils -Kimmeridgian marl in Pouilly-Fumé, flint stone in Sancerre or gravelly sand of Quincy and Reuilly, our technical teams work all-year-round to guarantee the development of our vineyards, respecting their environment and biodiversity.
Grape quality is essential to great winemaking that is why we particularly take care of our vines.
Rigorous pruning, superficial or deep tillage (depending on the plot soil) and natural fertilizers addition are very important winter actions.
In spring, when the vegetative period starts, de-budding, leaf-thinning and grapevine lifting operations will also contribute to producing very good quality grapes and eventually exceptional wines.
Fully dedicated to a long-term sustainable approach, Joseph MELLOT is committed to an eco-responsible viticulture: rigorous tillage, limited yields, plot-by-plot monitoring, mechanical weeding, traceability, etc. Every action is performed with respect to the soil and the plant so as to harvest top quality grapes every fall.
All of our vines are certified High Environmental Value (HVE).
Our Domaine des Emois Estate (Sancerre) is labeled ‘Organic Farming’ and Domaine des Mariniers (Pouilly-Fumé) has started its [3-year] conversion process.
Our Winery has also been ISO 14001 certified since 2009, a standard assessing the continuous improvement of our environmental performance. It essentially deals with the limitation of our consumption of natural resources and the preservation of the environment through sorting, recycling and waste-energy conversion (glass, plastics, wood, paper, cardboard, corks, etc.).
